1945 letter to Bordeaux, France, endorsed ‘Overland via Marseilles’ with a circular MAURITIUS POST OFFICE MR 13 1845 cancel, a fine four line MAURITIUS / STG. POSTAGE PAID h/s and an intaglio boxed OVERLAND. A Bordeaux 31 AUG 45 arrival datestamp is on the letter. Waghorn’s ‘Overland’ route speeded up mail between Mauritius and Europe but was only short lived in 1845 – 46. A superb and rare item, only 10 strikes of this POSTAGE PAID are recorded, and less than 5 of the OVERLAND h/s. and only 4 of the two in combination on a letter. A major exhibition item.
