PADDLE STEAMER ‘PACIFIC’. The Paddle Seamer Pacific was due to leave New York on September 28 1850 but on departure her paddle box collided with a shed on the wharf, killing one man and injuring several others. Her departure was delayed by a day due to this incident. This cover from GALENA, ILL, SEP 23 to Penrose Sithney, Nr. Helstone, Cornwall, has a 21 h/s, the 21c claimed by the New York Exchange Office (5c internal and 16c ocean charges). A 1/- h/s applied on arrival was the postage due from the recipient. A Liverpool OC 10 transit cancel is on the back, on the front is a Helstone OC 12 arrival c.d.s. Probably the only known cover from this incident. Of note: The Pacific went missing in January 1856 with a heavy loss of lives.
