1879 envelope to Ryde, Isle of Wight, endorsed ‘From Capt. Cramer on active service in Zululand’ with a 6d that has the variety ‘POSTAGE OVERPRINT INVERTED’. The cover entered the posts at Pietermaritzburg where it was cancelled with a barred ‘1’ and a G.P.O. NATAL 25 8 1879 datestamp. A Ryde OC 1 79 arrival cancel is on the back. There are only six recorded inverted POSTAGE stamps known on cover, all are used on military mail in Zululand. This cover is the latest date recorded. Fine and extremely rare.
