1988 NEW ZEALAND. A trailer carrying mail bags caught fire on State Highway One near Geraldine on Tuesday 25th October 1988. A large portion of the mail was destroyed. This letter, posted at Christchurch on 21 October that has been partly burned has a two line violet cachet ‘DAMAGED BY FIRE IN MAIL CONTRACTORS / VAN WHEN NEAR GERALDINE. 25 – 10 – 88. It is enclosed in an official explanatory plastic wrapper. A letter from the Post Office explaining the reason for the damage also accompanies the cover. Fine and uncommon.
