1862 CLEOPATRA. The 1452 ton steam ship ‘Cleopatra’, owned by the African Steam Ship Company was totally wrecked at the Shebar River by Sherbro’ off the Sierra Leone coast. Two covers only are known from this incident. Each has a two line cachet SAVED FROM THE WRECK / OF THE CLEOPATRA. This letter to New York, endorsed ‘via England’ is endorsed ‘Monrovia (Liberia) 31 July’. It transited through London OC 13 62 and arrived in New York 3 November. An extremely rare and early shipwreck, probably the only shipwreck cover known from Liberia and the only shipwreck mail from Sierra Leone.
