1897 CHARLOTTE, NC. A charred cover from MEXICO to New York, posted on April 8th, endorsed ‘Via Loredo’ that was damaged in a train incident near Charlotte, NC. A label has been affixed to the back of the cover that reads ‘Post Office New York, NY. / This piece of mail was damaged in a Railway wreck which occurred on the Southern Railway near Charlotte, NC. On April 11 1897Rodi Dayton, Postmaster.’ A New York receiving mark of 4 13 97 is on the cover. An extremely rare cover, this being the only one known from this incident.
