1909 SOUTH AFRICA. 1909 cover from Brighton to Pretoria that was on the train that, when passing through the Orange River Colony on the night of 6 October, had a fire in the mail carriage that was caused by a chemical substance exploding in the mail. The train stopped at Brandfort Station where water was pumped into the burning mail van and the fire extinguished. Much of the mail was burned. The mail was delayed for a couple of days, arriving in Pretoria on 9 October. Scarce item.
